How to Identify Motivation in Students

  1. How they make choices or preferences: if a student chooses to play video games over doing homework, the choice reflects their level of motivation.
  2. Time it takes to respond to Stimulation: the longer the students take to complete a task, this show less motivation.
  3. The efforts invested in a task. When a student puts more effort in completing a task, it shows a high level of motivation.
  4. Persistence: this is the motivation that a student has when studying or completing the school tasks. The sooner a student gives up, the less motivation they have.

Value the student’s efforts to reach the top grade. This encourages them to keep pulling their socks and ultimately they will perform well. Do not put so much importance on the final grades, show that you value the efforts they have put in to achieve whatever grades they have scored. Encourage and reward hard work when they are doing their homework and when they do final exams.

Keep The Child Involved When Making Decisions that Affect their Learning

The students too need to feel part of the decision making process. When they feel useful and involved, they will feel responsible and get more motivated. This applies for both the teachers as well as the parents. At the school level, it can be achieved through the appointed class representatives.

Make Use of incentives

Promise them that you will reward positive efforts. This can be through buying them valuables or taking them to a trip they fancy. It is important you set realistic and attainable goals when you are using the incentive to motivate the students. When the goal is achieved, set the bar higher so that they keep putting more efforts.

That is all you need to know about motivation. Note that when a student is motivated, they perform better. This is not only for the curriculum related activities; it is also for the co-curricular activities.
